The Best Homemade Chai Tea Mix
The Best Homemade Chai Tea Mix has the perfect combination of spice, sweetness and creaminess. Just wrap up in a blanket and enjoy!
Since we are going to be at home A LOT more this winter, I’ve been trying to come up with some ideas to keep the boys busy and to keep Matt and I entertained. Our latest daily routine involves a nightly flashlight walk.
It sounds simple (and it is), but the boys absolutely love it! We usually set out around 5pm – the sun has been setting around 4:30 lately. Everybody gets their own flashlight and we’re off!
Jack refers to himself as the “Night Patrol Officer” and takes his job very seriously. His head is in a constant rotation looking for cars. When he sees one, he shouts “CAR” and everyone has to run to the grass/snow (it varies a lot in MN)!
We have been having fun finding the new Christmas lights that pop up every week! Throughout this pandemic, I keep coming back to trying to find joy in simple things. This has helped me to get through each day a little easier.
- We can take a nightly walk.
- We can bring our flashlights and make it fun.
- We can find some Christmas cheer by looking for the new Christmas lights.
- We can make it through this.
Keep your chin up and keep finding the joy in the simple things.

The perfect “warm up drink”
When we get back from our walk, the boys always ask for hot chocolate. But lately, they have been asking for our new favorite – Chai Tea!
I love a good Chai Tea, but I don’t really want to spend $5 at a coffee shop every time I have a Chai Tea craving. I have tried all the store-bought mixes I could find at the store and nothing compares. And that’s how this recipe was born! It’s as good, or better, than a coffee shop Chai Tea. Try it for yourself to see what you think!
Can Kids Drink This?
They sure can – just make sure that it is decaffeinated! We all know that our children don’t need any more energy then they already have. Will already runs laps around me all day long, so I shudder to think what caffeinated Will would look like.
Instead of using caffeinated tea in this recipe, just use decaf! Not only do I like to make this tea decaffeinated for the kids but it makes for the perfect pre-bedtime drink.
What Should I Mix this Chai Tea With?
You can mix it with either water or milk – it totally depends on your preference. Since there is already powdered milk in the chai mix, it is already pretty creamy even if you just use water.

How Does it get so Frothy?
Let me start off by saying the milk doesn’t need to be frothy; it definitely doesn’t change the flavor. But, if you want your milk to be frothy, I suggest getting a milk frother. It is great to make chai tea, lattes or even hot chocolate!

What are you using now that we can’t buy the Lipton tea mix? I love this recipe.
Ahhh I’m so sad that Lipton discontinued their tea mix! I searched for a good substitute and found this: https://amzn.to/4fiwv74
I’m hoping this will taste just as good 🙂
Two questions:
Can I use a sugar substitute like Splenda or can sugar be omitted entirely?
Since when I buy Tetly decaf chai teabags there is no creamer — so can I omit the creamer from this recipe and just use fresh cream when I make a cup?
Thank you.
You can definitely use a sugar substitute! I wouldn’t recommend omitting sugar completely, as it needs the sweetness to balance out the flavor.
And, yes, you can omit the creamer entirely or just add fresh cream.
Hope you enjoy!!
I am planning on making this tomorrow. As for the plain powdered coffee creamer, do you need a 1/2 of two different brands or just a full cup of any brand. Does that make sense. Thanks
Yes, that makes perfect sense! You can just use 1 cup of 1 type of coffee creamer – it won’t change the flavor too much. I hope you enjoy it!!
