Frozen Spinach Cubes – for smoothies
Do you want to eat more veggies? Do you find yourself never being able to finish a carton of spinach? Does it go bad before you have a chance to eat it? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you need to make these Frozen Spinach Cubes. They are great to eliminate waste and to have to use in your next smoothie!
We love having smoothies in our house. I not only enjoy drinking smoothies but I like sneaking some greens into them as well. My boys are pretty good eaters but you can never have enough greens in your diet, right?!

Well, I went to the store the other day and they were totally out of frozen spinach AND kale (we are currently in a pandemic, after all). They did, however, have giant tubs of fresh spinach available. So, that’s what I bought!
Frozen Spinach Cubes Ingredients
- Fresh spinach
- Liquid of choice (I like to use orange juice but you could also use water, coconut water, or any beverage of your choosing)

I knew there was no way that we were going to go through all of that spinach, so I decided to make frozen cubes of spinach for our smoothies. I blended them with orange juice so they could have a smooth consistency. I always add a little bit of orange juice to our smoothies to add a touch of sweetness (I find that the kids don’t notice the spinach AT ALL if I use some orange juice).
When you are ready to make a smoothie, just drop one or two of the frozen spinach cubes into the blender with your other smoothie ingredients and blend away!
Tips for Involving Kids
- Let your kids be in charge of the blender. This is a VERY coveted position in our house!
- If you are feeling extra generous, have your kiddo pour the spinach/orange juice mixture into the ice trays. I’ll be honest, I was hesitant to let Will (3.5) do this but he hardly spilled at all and was soooo proud of himself afterwards.
- There is always going to be a mess when you cook with your kids but, like my little guy Will says, “It’s okay Mom, chefs make messes and then they clean it up.” Have fun cooking with your kids!!
