Easy Homemade Caramel Apple French Toast
This Easy Homemade Caramel Apple French Toast is just the addition you need for your weekend brunch! Perfectly browned brioche bread is garnished with a delicious caramel apple topping. It’s so good you just might wonder if you are eating dessert.
We just spent the weekend at a hotel with our boys. It’s hysterical to me the things that they find exciting. When I was booking the reservation, I had the option to select one king bed or two queen beds. I thought for about two seconds and then picked the king (don’t judge me, I wanted to be comfortable!).
I decided we would just bring sleeping bags and have the boys sleep on the floor. Also, just in case you were worried, I laid a blanket down first (I would never have them sleep directly on a hotel room floor)!

I wasn’t sure how it was going to go with us in a bed and them relegated to the floor but they shrieked in excitement when I told them the plan. “We get to have a campout sleepover in a hotel room?!?! YESSSSSSS!!!” Man, was I glad I took the selfish option and booked that king bed for me and Matt!
The other thing that they found absolutely amazing (besides the hotel pool, of course) was the continental breakfast. And, I’ll be honest, it wasn’t exactly a made to order omelet station. It was your run of the mill assorted breads, three kinds of cereal and a basket of fruit. BUT, they had options, people. And options, in the eyes of a 6 and 3 year old, are absolutely amazing. I can only hope that they remain this easy to please; it’s pretty awesome!

So, we still have a TON of apples from our apple orchard adventure. When we went to the orchard, we picked sooooo many apples. Whenever we do any sort of seasonal activity, I tend to get all swept up in the magic of what’s happening and sometimes tend to overdo it. Too many apples? Check. Too tall of a Christmas tree? Check. Too many renditions of “All I Want for Christmas is You”? Check. Too many gifts for the boys on Christmas? Check. I’ll spend time later trying to reel in my excessiveness at Christmas but right now I’m going to deal with my overflowing fruit drawer in my refrigerator.
Caramel Apple French Toast Ingredients:
- Brioche or Challah bread
- eggs
- skim milk
- ground cinnamon
- vanilla extract
- Honeycrisp apples
- butter
- vanilla extract
- brown sugar
Do I Need to Use Syrup?
No! With this Caramel Apple French Toast, the butter and brown sugar that you use to cook the apples acts as a perfect substitute for syrup (and, dare I say a better substitute)?!
I sliced the apples thin and cooked them down with just butter, brown sugar and vanilla (plus a dash of cinnamon)! The result is absolutely delicious – you don’t need to add any butter or syrup. So, if you’ve got some extra apples you need to use up, or some fresh ones from the store, make this French toast!! Your family will be thanking you for days.
Try My Other Apple Recipes!
When you have a bunch of apples, I think a natural thing to make is some type of dessert (in fact, I already did just that)! This time, I tried to think outside the dessert box. My boys absolutely LOVE french toast. Any time I make it, they scarf it right up. With this recipe, I decided to make a traditional french toast but then change our typical topping of butter and syrup.
What Type of Apple Should I Use?
Honeycrisp apples are the BEST! They are the perfect combination of crunchy, sweet and just a tiny bit tart. Fun fact – Honeycrisp apples were actually created here in Minnesota at the University of Minnesota.
Tips for involving kids
Let your kids help you cut up the apples with their own knives.
Have them crack an egg for you. I know, it goes against my better judgement too but just let them try. They will be SO proud when they finally get the hang of it!
Let them measure out all the ingredients for the egg wash and the apple mixture.
There is always going to be a mess when you cook with your kids but, like my little guy Will (3 years old) says, “It’s okay Mom, chefs make messes and then they clean it up.” Have fun cooking with your kids!!
