Easy One Pan Thai Basil Chicken
This Easy One Pan Thai Basil Chicken is cooked over high heat so the sauce caramelizes and perfectly coats the ground chicken and green beans. The dish is finished with finely chopped Thai basil to give it that authentic Thai flavor.
It has been so cold here in Minnesota. You know it’s going to be a bad week when you are watching the news and they reference “The Polar Vortex”. The highs have barely inched above 0 and they advise to not have exposed skin outside for more than 10 minutes. Fun! Oh, and then there is the pandemic. Trapped inside in a polar vortex during a pandemic. Send help!

We have been trying to keep busy by playing a ton of games. Board games. Cards. Simon Says. Red Light, Green Light. You name it and we have probably played it! I’ve also been making them a bunch of Sensory Bins. Never did I think that I would be the mom that would be dying rice to match my bin’s theme, but here we are! If this intrigued you, check out Busy Toddler to see how easy it is.
The boys are at a fun age to play games. Will is old enough that he can sit through (most) games. Plus, they are old enough that the games we can play are becoming more and more fun for us, too!
You know where it’s not cold? Thailand. You might be thinking why would you choose Thailand of all places?! Well, Thailand is the inspiration for this recipe and it was one of my favorite places that Matt and I have had the privilege of traveling.
Thailand is incredible. The food. The culture. The landscapes. The people. Everything about it was such a unique and enjoyable experience. Someday I would love to go back, and eat allll the food! The food was absolutely incredible.
When we were in Bangkok, we were able to have street food where they would cook these incredible dishes in woks right on the street. The flavors were like nothing I had tasted before – all for a mere couple of dollars.
One of those dishes was Thai Basil Chicken. I fell in love with the flavors and wanted to create it at home – but not in a wok on the street!
This dish is a perfect quick and easy dinner. Start to finish, you can get this one pan dish on the table in 15 minutes flat. If that isn’t quick and easy, I don’t know what is!
Why Thai Basil?
Thai Basil has a very unique flavor. It definitely has the traditional flavor of basil but it also has a little bit of an anise taste (kind of like black licorice). Before you write it off, know that I do not like black licorice. Not one bit. But Thai Basil? I love it!! It adds such a unique flavor to Thai dishes.
The problem is that Thai Basil can be very difficult to find. It isn’t always in your local grocery store. If you can’t find Thai Basil, you can substitute it for regular Basil. It will change the flavor a little bit but it will still be delicious!
Ground Chicken
If you don’t happen to have ground chicken on hand (or can’t find it in the grocery store), you can always substitute ground turkey. Ground chicken and ground turkey have very similar flavor profiles but ground chicken tends to be a little leaner. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Tips for Involving Kids
- Let your kids help you measure out all the ingredients for the sauce. Letting your kids help you measure out ingredients is a perfect opportunity to practice hand-eye coordination, self control, following directions, the list goes on.
- Have them help you slice the basil with their very own knives! You can find them here.
- There is always going to be a mess when you cook with your kids but, like my little guy Will says, “It’s okay Mom, chefs make messes and then they clean it up.” Have fun cooking with your kids!!
