Easy Hoisin Turkey Lettuce Wraps
These Easy Hoisin Turkey Lettuce Wraps are inspired by the classic appetizer at PF Chang’s. Ground turkey, mushrooms, garlic and ginger are simmered in a savory hoisin sauce and served in lettuce wraps.
We just got to celebrate Jack’s 7th birthday! Not quite sure how my first-born is already SEVEN- but time absolutely flies when you have kids. While a birthday in the midst of a pandemic isn’t exactly the most ideal timing, we tried to make the most of it. And, to be honest, it was actually really great to have something to look forward to.
In our typical tradition, we really like to prolong birthday celebrations! The more celebrations, the better, right?! We celebrated on 3 different days – with just the four of us, with my family and with Matt’s family. I’ll give you one guess as to the birthday theme.
You got it – baseball! Baseball cake, baseball decorations, baseball gifts, baseball plates, baseball cups, everything BASEBALL. Oh, and how could I forget the baseball games that we played, too!
Friday was his actual birthday and it could not have been more perfect. The Twins opening night just happened to fall on his actual birthday – July 24! When we found this out, Jack was so excited. “This is the BEST birthday present ever!!! I don’t need any other presents – I got the best one already” (maybe I should have returned the hamster we got him).
He said that “all of his dreams would come true” if we played a 9 inning baseball game on his birthday. Two hours later, we were all drenched in sweat and ready for a cold glass of water! Jack and I beat Matt and Will 11-5 (Jack takes score keeping VERY seriously).
We gave Jack two birthday gifts that he couldn’t have been more excited about – a hamster (that he named Cruz, after Nelson Cruz from the Twins) and a life size wall decal of Miguel Sano (also from the Twins, if you aren’t familiar). Are you noticing a theme here?!
Matt and I wanted to make the Twins opening night really special for Jack (although it was already really special since it was on his birthday)! Each of the boys got an envelope that included a “ticket” to the game and a $5 bill. Matt was the usher that escorted them to their seats and took their tickets at the front door.
I made a bunch of ballpark food and the kids had to “buy” their own dinner. Their eyes absolutely lit up when they saw that cotton candy was available! We let the boys eat dinner in the living room (on a picnic blanket) and they thought it was SUCH a special thing to be able to do. We had such a fun night – everybody enjoyed our at home viewing party!
After all that Dairy Queen ice cream cake (we did have TWO after all!!), we needed a lighter dinner for the next couple of days. Turkey Lettuce Wraps seemed like the perfect solution!
I love these One Dish Turkey Lettuce Wraps – they are filling while still being light. Plus, the boys love these too (they will even eat them with the lettuce wrap)! If you don’t think your kids would eat the lettuce wraps, you can always serve the turkey mixture with rice – that’s bound to be a hit!
How to Serve to Kids
I am a firm believer in not making a separate meal for my kids. Even if they may not “like” the meal (or they may not think they like the meal), I have several ways of presenting the meal without making something else.
Deconstruction is definitely your friend. I often serve the boys the exact same meal that we eat but just separate it into the different elements (meat, vegetable, pasta). Another way that I have found helpful is to always serve one “safe food” that I know they will for sure eat and then let them make their own plate. This alleviates the pressure of mealtime and encourages them to try new things, while still having food that they love.

How to Make these Turkey Lettuce Wraps
When the words “One Dish” are in the title of a recipe, I am always in. I have enough cleaning and dishes to do at a baseline, so if I can make dinner for my whole family and only dirty one dish – that’s a win.
When you are cooking these One Dish Turkey Lettuce Wraps, the first thing that you need to do is cook the ground turkey. Once the turkey is no longer pink, you can add the other vegetables and the sauces.
The turkey then slowly simmers in the hoisin sauce and becomes insanely flavorful.
